Question:

Changing surname when getting married? Would this be weird?

When I was born, my parents gave me a hyphenated surname. It has my dad's Irish surname and my mum's French surname. I love this as it has meaning to me considering I am half Irish, half French. Anyway, I am getting married at my husband-to-be has a Greek dad and an Irish mum. His dad left so he changed to go by his mum's surname. I'm not exactly close to my dad either so I was thinking about possible keeping my surname hyphenated but having his mum's Irish surname with my mum's French surname. Would that be weird?

  1. It would be complicated. Just use the same last name as your husband, so when you have kids they don't have to try to explain hyphenated surnames to their kindergarden class

  2. Well, hyphenated surnames are uncommon, if this is what you mean by "weird". But you already have a hyphenated name, so it's not going to be any weirder than it is now. Truthfully, what you do with your name is entirely up to you - nothing is "weird" in a bad sense; some options are less common than others, but it's all good as long as you're happy with it. I kept my own name after marriage, and it's not causing anyone any problems. It's entirely up to you.

  3. Not at all! I'd do it.

  4. Do whatever feels right to you!  Don't worry about if it's weird.  Personally, I think it's a very sweet idea.
