  1. As for the measuring Lowes will do, Empire Today will do, or most any carpet store can help out there. Basically you need the square footage, so here is what you do for a "quote" number:

Measure the width and length of each area to be carpeted. Multiply the width by the length. For example:

    Living Room:

    10 foot wide x 20 feet deep = 200 sqft.

So if your carpet with installation costs $3.25 per square foot you would be looking at $650.00 for the living room.

My example for pricing is hopefully way high, but that's the principal of how to guestimate the cost. At least you can get a ballpark figure before the people start quoting you. I would definitely check out Lowes and them, since they often offer a lot of free services and have a slim selection, which is usually the most popular styles and colors of the season. If you go to a carpet store you will see hundreds of styles to choose from and have no idea what you are looking at, although the sales guys there tend to have more info overall.

I like looking at the Great Indoors, they have a very nice selection of materials that are higher end. I often find something thats nice there and then go shopping for a better price.

  2. Home Depot does all those things for you and they have competitive pricing with Lowes.
