Question:

Changing the name of a boat?

I bought a boat "Miss Becky", named for the previous owner's wife. Upon further examination, I see that the boat used to be called "Siggy". I'm not sure if that was the original name or not. I know it's bad luck to change the name of a boat, but I'm wondering if that bad luck is transferred? ie: if I was not the one that changed the name, do I not get the bad luck or is the bad luck tied to the boat? Should I change it back to Siggy?; Should I just leave it as Miss Becky? Should I just start again and name it something else?

  1. Name it anything you want... it is an old superstition... Is it a sail boat by any chance?  If so, you may be in luck... It also used to be a superstition to put a gold coin under or at the base of the mast... WOW! What a nice find that would be.

  2. Don't buy into superstition.

Boats cost a lot of money to operate and maintain. You've purchased the right to call your boat whatever name is pleasing to you.

  3. It is bad luck to rename a boat, however the time to do it is soon after you buy it. Here is a link to a boat renaming ceremony:

There are several out there, and there is even one on youTube. Check it out.

The bad luck does not run with the boat, it runs with the owner. Exorcise the demons with the ceremony and name your boat whatever you like.

    Cheers.

  4. Listen your going to be flushing money with any boat so you might as well enjoy it. Best to enjoy the rituals and what not.

So get on the p**s find a virgin to ahhh, inaugurate your bow and then change the name and enjoy.

    Cheers

  5. seastar  or skysea

  6. Name the boat whatever you want, it should be something that suits you and your personality.  I know people that have changed the name of their boat when they purchased it, none of them have had bad luck.

  7. I didn't used to be superstition but after renaming two boat and having bad luck, I left the 3rd boats name alone and it's been fine.

There is some lore about name changing and would look into it. Superstition might be all in our head, but that doesn't mean it isn't real.
