Hello all,

I have a through the wall A/C that is a little over 2 yrs old. Its blowing cool air just not really cold air. The thermostat is at 60. I think the thermostat is stuck, Is this a DIY. I'm pretty handy, but don't want to make it worse.

The unit is a Fredericks wallmaster.

Thanks

  1. If compressor is running, it's not a thermostat issue.  Check condensor coil is free of c**p, only thing left is low freon

  2. If your stat is set at 60 and the unit and compesser are running the stat is not the problem. It sounds to me the freon level is low and needs to be charged.Need to have unit serviced...

  3. Measure the temp of the supply air then measure the temp of the return air.Subtract the two measured temps. If it is less than 15  ,you might could have a problem. If it is more than 15,everything is probably o.k. with your system.

Sounds like the t-stat is bad though.

When you replace it,make sure you shut the power off to your indoor unit prior to replacing it or you could smoke the transformer and have to replace that too.

Then restore power after you change it.

Notate everything you need before you buy one like gas, electric, heat pump, programmable, non etc.

  4. The thermostat is not bad the condenser could be dirty how much heat blowing outside when running. If the unit is low on gas the evap coil will have a warm section to it remove filter and put your hand up and down the coil if it is cold all the way then the gas is ok. window units need cleaning once a year. remove take outside and rinse with a hose well everything, let unit dry out well 24-48 hours before you plug it in.

  5. Is your building very hot? The heat load may be more than a small A/C unit can handle.

Is the exterior paint on the outside of the building a darker color or is there shade on the solar exposed sides of the building?

Solar radiation including the same UV that burn our skin is causing buildings to generate heat the building isn't designed for. Go to the following link to see what temperature actually looks like and how it can be changing your building. http://www.thermoguy.com/globalwarming-h...
