Changing your name?

I'm just wondering how you go about changing your name? Or adding another name to your name like another middle name or something. How much does it cost? I'm guessing that you probly have to have all your things (ss card, drivers license..etc) changed too.

Where can I find info on this

  1. Ask Barack Obama

    He was originally named "Barry"

  2. You're correct....if you have your name legally changed, all those other documents will have to be changed as well. It can get rather pricey.  This will vary from state to state, but you can expect to drop at least a hundred bucks to complete the name change process. I've heard some folks spending upwards of $400.  Again, just depends on court costs in your area.

A legal name change that is not a result of getting married requires a name change form from the county in which you live. Usually, the county will require you to have people who know you complete affidavits affirming that you are sane and competent and indicate why you want the name change. Once you file your name change form and any additional affidavits, the courts will notify you to advertise the change before the court date mandated to finish the process. The notice will appear in the local newspapers under legal notices (check your newspapers for their rates). After that, a court date will be set and you'll go through the formality of telling the court why you want to change your name. These are usually quick and painless--unless someone objects.

Once all that is approved, you start the process of changing SS card, driver's lic, bank info, Post Office, etc.

    Hope that helps!

  3. i think its like 7 dollers.

but dont change it. your parents gave you that at birth.

    its like a birthmark man.

  4. I have the exact same question.

  5. Unless you are using it to perpetrate fraud, you may be called by any name you choose.  However, this does not make it your legal name.  In order for a legal name change, you must file papers with your county clerk, pay a fee (usually not too much), and appear before a judge.
