Question:

Channels on my new LCD HDTV, like 11.1 sometime scramble with picture and audio. What's going on?

Just bought a Sony LCD HDTV, Bravia KDL-40S4100. Signals for HD channels like 11.1, 13.1, etc get scrambled. I upgraded from an analog TV, and antenna. Is the scrambling something normal or am I in need of some extra equipment? Regular nonHD channels also look bad. I also have no cable, or satellite. I think there's a built in HDtuner. Thanks.

  1. What you are probably seeing are technically called artifacts and look like little blocks on the screen.  This is often followed by a screen that says NO SIGNAL or WEAK SIGNAL.  What this means is you need a new antenna or you need to aim yours more accurately.  You might also see this in bad weather which you cannot control unless the new antenna helps.  Be sure to buy the right antenna for the distance to the transmitters.  If you live in the US see this site and click Choose An Antenna for more help.

It is run by the Consumer Electronics Association and the National Association of Broadcasters.

  3. Your TV is looking for a HD signal but only sees weak  (actually no signal).  Your set up says you will only get over the air HD signals if you have a proper external antenna.  That will help with the non-HD channels as well.
