Chantal Sutherland – superb in the saddle
Canadian rider Chantal Sutherland seems to have it all. She has claimed a number of titles and plans to add more victories to her brilliant career.
She is one of the top jockeys in the United States trying to make it in a man’s world and so far, she has done a pretty good job.
The jockey’s first career victory came on 9th October, 2009 and following that year, she was voted Canada's top apprentice jockey and given the Sovereign Award.
Chantal decided to try her luck in the United States in 2005, and kicked off at Florida and New York and polished her skills even further. She relocated to Southern California with the hope of racing in the Breeders’ Cup and the Kentucky Derby.
Soon enough, the ambitious rider got what she wanted when she rode, Mine That Bird, in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in 2008, at Santa Anita.
She also mounted, Van Lear Rose, that year in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies and ended up in sixth place.
Briefly engaged to Hall of Fame rider Mike Smith, Sutherland got an immense amount of popularity. After the couple broke up, the former couple faced off in the Breeders' Cup Classic in 2011, where Sutherland was aboard, Game on Dude, while Smith rode
Drosselmeyer.
Sutherland nearly had it, but lost the race and finished as a runner-up. Despite this, the skillful jockey made history when she became the first female jockey to compete in the $10 million Dubai World Cup, aboard Bob Baffert’s trainee Game on Dude.
The biggest victories of her career include the Grade 3 Eclipse Stakes in Canada, where she guided Ice Bear to victory. She excelled in the Grade 1 Santa Anita Handicap in 2011, with her prized runner, Game On Dude.
On 7th July, 2012, Sutherland became the first female jockey to win the Grade 1 Hollywood Gold Cup at Betfair Hollywood Park, when she led Game On Dude to victory.
Currently, the multiple graded stakes winning jockey’s record stands at 929-924-978 in 7,296 starts and has career earnings worth $46,878,958.
