Chantal VanLandeghem wins Women’s 100m freestyle: Day two – 2012 Canadian Summer Nationals
Chantal VanLandeghem of MANTA won gold medal of the Women’s 100m freestyle on second day of the 2012 Canadian Summer Nationals at the Edmonton Kinsmen Sport Centre in Edmonton on Friday, July 20.
VanLandeghem enjoyed a comfortable lead over her strongest challenger as she dominated the double lap freestyle discipline in a wonderful manner and reached the wall for gold medal.
With her astonishing pace, VanLandeghem enjoyed a half body length lead over Sandrine Mainville of PPO and cruised her way towards the finishing wall with the timing of 55.66 seconds.
Her gold claiming effort remained 0.46 seconds slower from Mainville, who occupied silver medal of the discipline by clocking a time of 55.66 seconds.
The second position holder was chased by Chantique Payne of GMAC, who stayed almost 0.70 seconds slower from her foregoing finishing and stepped on the victory stand for bronze medal by producing an effort of 56.30 seconds.
Fourth position of the discipline was secured by Michelle Williams of NYAC, who remained only 0.18 seconds slower from overpowering the third position holder and tapped the wall with an effort of 56.48 seconds.
Williams was trailed by Lauren Earp of ESWIM, who remained 0.13 seconds apart and made her way to the finishing wall with the timing of 56.61 seconds for fifth place.
The 18-year-old Earp was followed by Victoria Chan of RHAC Predators, who stayed 0.45 seconds behind and earned sixth position of the discipline by posting a time of 57.06 seconds.
Similarly, Chan was traced by Brittney Harley of VAND, who stayed just a touch away from overpowering her former finisher and ended her race in seventh place. Harley remained only 0.01 seconds slower from Chan and hit the finishing end with the timing of 57.07 seconds.
She was followed by Paige Kremer of OSC, who suffered a loss of 0.12 seconds from her preceding swimmer and touched the finishing blockade as eighth position holder by posting a time of 57.19 seconds.
VanLandeghem was overjoyed with her fascinating win in the 100m discipline and stressed that she would continue her struggle to achieve the same at forthcoming events.
