Chappell wants Ponting to quit captaincy
Former Australian Captain Ian Chappell has told Ricky Ponting to resign as Test captain following Australia’s massive defeat at the hands of England in Melbourne. Chappell has warned the current Australian captain that if he doesn't quit, the national selectors
might show him the door.
Ponting himself admitted that he doesn’t have any excuses to make to the selectors after not being able to regain the Ashes for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746. The home team lost the Boxing Day Test match by a massive margin of an innings and 157 runs. As a result the home team
cannot regain the urn, since the visitors go into the final Test in Sydney with an unassailable 2-1 lead.
England hasn’t won a Test series in the visiting country since 1986-87. If the visitors manage to clinch the series Down Under this time around, then it will be their first in 24 years. On the other hand, Ponting will the first Australian captain to lose
three Ashes series in a row since Bill Murdoch in the late 1800's.
The Australian skipper has struggled with the bat in the series, scoring just 113 runs at a dismal average of 16 with a solitary half-century in Brisbane. Apart from a double century in Hobart, the right-hand batsman hasn’t racked up a single hundred in
2010.
Chappell said in an interview, "I've said all along that this should be the end of his Test captaincy reign. I think he should be given the opportunity to defend the World Cup as a captain, but I just hope he makes the decision himself. I'd hate to see Ricky
Ponting get pushed; I'd rather see him jump than be pushed."
However considering both forms of the game, Ricky is the most successful captain in the history of cricket. In 77 Test matches, the Australian legend has successfully led his team to 48 victories. Ever since the retirement of players such as Glenn McGrath,
Shane Warne, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adam-Gilchrist-c918 and Mathew Hayden, Ponting’s record as skipper of the Kangaroos has declined.
Australia’s next Test assignment is a tour of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/New-South-Wales-c823 Player, there is a good chance he could be stripped of the captaincy.
