How does Stienbeck use language to convey mood in Chapter 3 of Grapes of Wrath.

    The concrete highway was edged with a mat of tangled, broken, dry grass, and the grass heads were heavy with oat beards to catch on a dog's coat, and foxtails to tangle in a horse's fetlocks..

    He uses descriptive words  and phrases that make you see and feel how dry, parched and hostile the land is. The turtle's struggle however futile it seems still indicates hope as the seeds drop into the dirt and dirt is pulled over them. If it ever rains again, live will continue... However, the use of words really conveys a dark, sad depressed time...

    In case you couldn't tell, I love Steinbeck, had a copy in the bookcase right within reach.!
