Question:

Chapter books for preK and kindergartners?

Grandson is starting kindergarten next fall. He will be five at the end of March. We read chapter books, 1 chapter before his nap and 1 chapter before bed every night. We're currently reading Captain Underpants.

Does anyone have any suggestions for other fun/funny/silly chapter books for kids?

  1. The magic tree house.  But captain underpants is really good for that age.

  2. My son loves all kinds of stuff, and has just started chapter books - he is 4 1/2 and his favourite right now is old school Winnie the Pooh. My husband is reading him "The House at Pooh Corner" which was first written in 1928. I was sure it would be too advanced or too old-fashioned for him, but he loves it.

  3. Pippi Longstocking, absolutely my favourite children's book ever. Also the sequel is good. It's not girly, even, though the main character IS a girl.

Other chapter books I enjoyed as a kid were Black Beauty (not so popular with boys), anything Roald Dahl, especially The Fantastic Mr. Fox and Matilda, and... that's all I can think of at the moment.

I recently read an adaptation of the true story of The Elephant Man for children, by Frederick Drimmer. Maybe not kindergarten level, there's some very complicated words now and then as I recall, but it wasn't bad.

  4. Oggie gooder & Junie B.

  5. Ramona the Pest . . . classic and about a Kindergartner.  We like Magic Tree House, Junie B. was too much of a - dare I say - brat for my girls at that age, but they are older now and like it.  Charlie and The Chocolate Factory is good too, but again, the children are rotten in it.

Perhaps calling the library and asking the children's librarian may yield some ideas.

Enjoy your reading . . . the leap to chapter books is so wonderful!

  6. It is also okay for kindergartners to read picture books. There are many more advanced picture books with more text, but still having the picture support. I'm not sure I would stick to just chapter books for a kid so young. Though, if you are reading to him and he is enjoying it I would continue with what you are doing. Poetry is great too. I love Jack Prelutsky.

  7. I have to agree with Kristen S.  We read Junie B. Jones, as well, in our Kindergarten and the kids absolutely LOVE it.

  8. Junie B. Jones.  There's a whole series.  Starts when she's in Kindergarten and goes through first grade.  My son LOVES IT!!!  You'll enjoy them, too!

  9. Flat Stanley, and most likely he will read it in school too.

  10. cat tom
