What sounds better...

Princess Lucia Merit Van Dirrian

Lady Lucia Merit Van Dirrian

Countess Lucia Merit Van Dirrian

Baroness Lucia Merit Van Dirrian

for the sake of a character

who will often only be referred to by her title and first name.

What title would you choose for yourself... if you were to have the opportunity?

  10. Either lady or countess sounds best in my opinion. :)

  11. I like Princess Lucia Merit Van Dirrian if she is a younger character. I'd go with Lady Lucia if she were a little older.

  12. Very interesting Q'

I think the age (and or) attitude of the character should determine her title.  Think of Movies staged in this Era...

    Very Young - Princess

    25-30-ish - (unmarried) Lady

    30-40ish (Unmarried - & Bitter) Countess

40-50ish (Still Unmarried or Widowed) Baroness

Love That Era, This is Just a Matter of Personal Suggestion

    * I would Probably be a Lady or a Countess *

  13. If this is for a fictional character, I don't know how accurate you want to be but there are no circumstances under which a Countess or Baroness would be addressed or referred to as "Countess Lucia" or "Baroness Lucia."

If they are the countess or baroness in their own right (i.e. they inherited the title) or if they are married to the earl/baron, they'd be referred to as "Countess Devon" or "Lucia, Countess of Devon" (ditto Baroness). They'd be address as either "My lady" or "Lady Devon"

If they are the daughter of a noble, it depends on whether they are married or unmarried; and if the former, what rank their husband is. Essentially though, they are usually referred to as "Lady Lucia (Van Dirrian)" and addressed as "Lady Lucia"

This is actually true for all ranks (including Duchesses, Marchionesses, Viscountesses and Baronetesses). The only except is "Princess." This title is only given to the children (and at the monarch's discretion) to the grandchildren of a sitting monarch.

So essentially Lady Lucia sounds more accurate. And luckily, I think it sounds better.

  14. Countess
