  1. Aside from the way they look, and the height of the heels, jazz shoes (oxford or gores) are much more flexible and obviously allow a lower center of gravity. Characters can also be used for tap class with taps and rubbers.

  2. They're actually very different. In my ballet class, we do character. I also take jazz.

Character Dance is a specific subdivision of Classical Dance based on national and folkloric traditions that have been stylized and included in classical ballet.

Most popular in the Classical Character repertoire are the national dances of Hungary, Russia, Poland, and Spain: csárdás, mazurka, flamenco, etc.

    CHARACTER.

  3. character shoes have the heel on them and you have to have some good balance if you can going to be doing technical stuff in them.

jazz shoes are just there to help to turn and stuff. you have more balance in them because your whole foot is on the ground than like character heels.

  4. character shoes have a heel and look like heeled tap shoes with out the taps :D

usually character shoes are used for ballroom, or something along those lines.

  5. Character shoes have a harder sole and heel whereas jazz shoes are generally almost flat.  They often have a strap that goes across the top of the foot.  Used alot in Broadway shows.  The Rockettes wear something similar, although I think theirs are higher than the norm.  Go to Discountdancesupply.com, click on shoes, then character shoes and you will see them.  Take care and good luck.
