  1. I am a slow learner but I was never put into regular class. I feel that if you have a disability, that you should get the proper help that you are entitled to get.I also feel that regular class are not for children or even parents who do have a slow learning disability, because the children or the parent of a regular class may look at you different then what you have intended them to do. You don't want to make yourself or the child feel uncomfortable, I know I have been there and it is not fun. If you have that problem be in a class that you would be able to maintain the tasks that need to be done at you own Pace. Because being in class with other with needs is better then being in a class where the teacher doesn't have time to help you.

  2. The term slow learner is used to describe a learner that does not qualify for special ed. These students have lower IQ's and generally have a harder time in school because of it. The term slow learner is used because it usually takes them longer to learn what they need to. Sometimes slow learners are behavior problems because they get easily frustrated because the work is too hard for them. Every now and then you get a slow learner that is an extremely hard worker in spite of the circumstances. these are the ones that have a better chance.

  3. I don't think I agree with the term 'slow learner.'

Some cognitive impairments (mental retardation) will reflect characteristics of slow learning - but they are low incidence occurrences.

A specific learning disability is a high frequency occurrence that I would more likely buy into in defining 'slow learner.'

Reading and comprehension problems comprise 90% of learning disabled individuals.  Logically, reading and comprehension will effect every content area.  While a student might be a  whiz at math, if they can't correctly read and comprehend the story problem their math solutions will falsely show that they aren't good at math.

Common characteristics are spelling problems, illegible writing and difficulty in composition.  Problems with basic computational skills, deficits in motor ability, decreased ability to process information or problems with the pragmatics of language.

Students with LD also have problems in at least two important areas of cognition:  metacognition and memory.  Metacognition refers to "thinking about thinking."

Individuals with LD additionally tend to have low or problematic social skills.

  4. Slow learners as a term is just bad form.  Children with a learning disability or who are cognitively impaired will not be progressing along with their peers and will continue to fall behind as they term progresses.   You can informally measure this in the classroom by observation of skills and written work.  Now, in classrooms, general ed teachers are more and more responsible for identifying these students and recommending them to a student study team or RTI which can lead to special education services.
