Could someone please tell me what was a Charge Ringer, with respect to the olden days. Saw this on an obituary and have no idea what this is plus couldn't find anything on a search.

Thanks in advance.

  1. I second the lady above me; "Change ringer". The print you are reading may be blurred, or the typesetter may have goofed.

It is quite the thing in England. Dorothy Sayers wrote a whole Lord Peter Wimsely novel about it, "The Nine Tailors". I'm not English. From the novel I get the feeling it was a hobby, not an occupation.

Google it with "Change" instead of "Charge" and you'll get tons of hits.

This assumes your man was a Brit or lived in a country with a strong British heritage. If he was Chinese, Cherokee or Zulu, we are wrong.

  2. are you sure it wasn't a "change ringer"?

Change ringing is a system of ringing church bells in set patterns (changes).
