Charging a Sat Nav for the first time?

Question

do you have to leave it on constantly or is it safe enough to charge it on off as long as it's charged for the correct time period?

eg. charge it when i'm driving for 20 minutes at a time?

or does it need to charge solidly for three hours the first time it charges?

Any battery should be fully charged in one session the first time it is charged. It helps to prolong battery life if it is fully discharged before recharging especially for the first few charges and it will help if it is always fully recharged in one session.
