Charging batteries for a digital camera..?

Tomorrow is my daughter's graduation, and I am charging the batteries up in the charger plugged into the wall. When I plugged it in, the little yellow light came up (to signal charging). How long does it need to charge for? Will the light go off? I have not used the camera in almost a year. Thank you so much! I lost the instructions.
