  1. It sounds like the problem is in the alternator, probably the regulator. Get a friend to help you check the voltage across the battery with the ignition off. Start the car up and note the voltage at tick over. Increase the engine speed to about 2 - 3,000rpm. The first reading should be around 12- 13.8v, the second 13 - 14v and the last should not go above 14v for any length of time. If you get a high or low reading when the engine is running, suspect the alternator. Get the diagnosis confirmed before condemning the part - it could be a loose wire or bad connection.

  2. ALTERNATOR OVERCHARGING.

HAVE THE CHARGING OUTPUT CHECKED. SIMPLE JOB, ONLY TAKES 5 MINUTES.

    IF OK COULD BE BATTERY.

IF THE ALTERNATOR HAS "BOILED" THE BATTERY YOU WILL HAVE TO CHANGE BOTH

  3. The battery could be low on water or otherwise knackered.

Don't be tempted to buy another battery from Halfords as they won't accept a return unless there is actually a fault with the battery. They have a tester in the store to decide if the battery is broken or if it has just been discharged and/or otherwise used by the customer.

Likewise, the battery might just need changing.

Beware... old or damaged batteries can explode. This happens when they start to give off gas! The plastic casing will explode and crack and the battery acid will drain out. Not nice.

I would try changing the battery first. But remember the advice above.  Shops will not take a battery back just because of a misdiagnosis.  If you buy a replacement battery then it will be yours for good.  If it does not fix the problem with the alternator light then just accept that you have a new battery and then look at some of the other possible causes. At least the battery won't fail for another 5 years.

  4. Alternator voltage regulator is Faulty, You could have the old one reconditioned or when buying a new one hand in the old alternator and they will give you £30/£50 of your bill

check the battery voltage with a multi meter to confirm that the alternator is overcharging voltage should not be any higher then 14 volts or the battery will be boiled causing Explosive hydrogen gas being discharged.

  5. bad battery/ low water/ bad alternator

  6. You have a major electrical fault.

  7. Get it into a service center as soon as possible! It sounds like a bad alternator and it is overcharging the battery, causing it to overheat.
