Charities- environment conservation or "sanctuaries"?

Righty ho, I am thinking of giving some money to charity to save the tigers, would you say "conservation" is better (ie national wildlife parks type things preserving tigers in their natural habitat? money would be used for preventing poaching with patrols, preventing illegal trading, etc.) or tiger "sanctuary" type things where they have rescued tigers that are looked after by man, (ie fed, usually caged, and left to reproduce, etc.) (ie not left out in the wild to be poached but rather "domesticated" by being "looked after" by man, therefore money would be spent on food etc directly for the animals)?

  1. Go for the ones actually conserving these animals in the wild..if we saved their wild habitats there would be no need for such sanctuaries in the first place.  The first step in saving an endangered species is to conserve their natural habitat.

  2. Conservation is what my choice would be, because just like humans we don't like to be caged up and told what to do. Just make sure the money you donate actually goes towards what you want to have changed. :)

  3. conservation definitely, and in particular those charities that involve the local people. any sceme will fail if you do not consider the humans!

also,  those going for less rich but larger tracts of land away from growing populations, where there is less competition from humans, rather than the fancy 'hotspot' ones, seem to be proving to be better value for money.

  4. Conservation has been a failing effort.  Where there is money to be made by poaching endangered species, those species continue to be killed in conservation areas.

Sure, tigers don't like to be inside a fence area, even if it gives them lots of acres.  But that sure beats getting killed to make Chinese aphrodisiacs.  The creatures are not domesticated in sanctuaries.  Heck, even the ones in zoos retain their natural instincts - and I pity the fool who taunts the 'sanctuary' tiger.

If your goal is to keep the critters alive, give them sanctuary.

  5. I am glad you are considering giving money to help tigers.  They are beautiful animals.

I recommend giving your money to organisations that conserve tigers in the wild because protecting habitats benefits many species as well as the target species.

I also favour organisations with a good track record such as the WWF.  It is better to make a relatively small contribution to a winning team rather than a large contribution to failure.

I hope this advice will be helpful.

    Best wishes.

  6. The world is getting bigger....not land wise but we are expanding, building new stuff all over the place so animals really almost have no wehe else to live. I think its kinda sad. We should let the animals be as long as it is not a danger to humans.

  7. Every charity has its own merits. Saving endangered species is the best way to go.

  8. Hi, I applaud your concern for the animals, but before you donate monies to any charity look at the structure of that charity.  There are so many of them, with the directors, road managers raking off a very good living from your donations.  Now I am not saying they are all the same.  Even high street charity shops have this problem with volunteer staff manning the tills and others living of off the tills. Please donate, but like me check what is going on with the funds raised.
