Question:

Charity award schemes... working unnoticed?

I have a friend who is deeply involved in community service and charity stuff. But because he doesn't flaunt what he does... no one notices.

As in... he singlehandedly cleaned out a park over the weekend (small one) but as he didn't tell anyone until after he did it... it wasn't any big news.

And then 3 days later some rich kid does half the work he did and gets in the paper... simply because he boasted about it.

My friend refuses to tell anyone about the work he does... but I know deep down he expects them to be smart enough to notice. I mean... I wonder how a filthy park got miraculously cleaned over the weekend...

What do YOU think his path should be? continue unnoticed... or not?

The main thing is charity award schemes. They do (not significantly) make a diference in your job interviews.

Up till now he has definately been more deserving that most the award winners... but he hasn't told anyone.

So what should he do (your opinion).

  1. He should do what he feels is most appropriate for himself. Some volunteers love awards and certificates and thank you ceramic mugs and what not -- some volunteers loathe that kind of "recognition." If he's volunteering entirely on his own, rather than through a nonprofit organization, he will continue to go "unnoticed", and from your description, it sounds like that's what he wants.
