Charity work..?

Question

im 16 years old and i have always very much wanted to do some charity work over christmas .. even on christmas day or eve or just around that time as i feel that over the past few years my christmases have become far to much about material things and i would like to give something back and help others less fortunate than me.

however i do not know what i am able to do at my age.

i would love to be able to help out at a shelter, even if its just decorating. or anything like that to be honest

anything that i can do to help

so my question is. at my age what can i do, and how do i go about arranging it? x x x

Well, congratulations on wanting to give charitable help. If you look on the internet or in your local Yellow Pages, you will see a list of local charities.  Look and see what you are interested in and then contact these charities.  Believe me, they will welcome you with both arms. I manage a charity for older people and have many volunteers that help us.  I have a lovely 17 year old volunteer (she was 16 when she joined us) and she helps on our day trips, with group work activities and helps us take frail older people grocery shopping.  Like you, she is a breath of fresh air.

Good for you, young lady!  How about volunteering with the homeless shelters in your area?  Check out the churches around you and see what they are doing for the holidays - They always need extra help.

if you live in britain you could approach Shelter, the organisation that supports homeless people (if you buy a Big Issue the contact number will be in there for your area).  There are also organisations, county wide, that communicate with all voluntary services in your county (they'll probably have a name like 'County name' Association of Voluntary Services - they will then put you in touch with all sorts of charities who may welcome volunteers.  Well done you, most charities these days can't get enough volunteers.
