Charl Schwartzel aims for a second major win at Atlanta Athletic Club
The proud owner of this year’s green jacket, Charl Schwartzel has returned to Georgia to compete in this week’s PGA Championship, and believes that the Atlanta Athletic Club suits his style.
The South African, who marveled the crowd in early April with four consecutive birdies on the four closing holes en route to a win, is bidding for another major title. According to the veteran, the greens of Augusta bear resemblance with the greens of Atlanta,
which compliment his style of game.
“The speed of the greens here is right up there. They are really fast and they're smooth. I have generally found playing on those fast greens good for me. I've felt that my stroke suited it, and I'm happy to have these greens at these speeds,” said Schwartzel.
After hitting balls in Georgia on Tuesday, the Master Champion realized that another win might not be a distant possibility. He said that although Atlanta Athletic Club was completely different from the Augusta Golf Club, it still brought positive memories.
Schwartzel earned a lot of confidence from the two-shot victory at the Masters four months ago. This confidence took him to the Congressional in June for the US Open, where he tied for ninth place, and to Royal St. George's for the Open Championship, where
he settled for 16th place.
“After the win at the Masters, I just feel like every time I enter one of these major championships I can compete in them and get a win out of them. You can see... the last couple of majors I've played in, I've played much better,” said Schwartzel, when
talking about the benefits of winning a major.
The 26-year-old golfer will tee off alongside Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy on Thursday. Clarke is the Open Champion, whereas, McIlroy is the US Open winner. The pairing is interesting; the trio of major winners will compete for the final major title of
the season. However, which one of the three would rise to the top by the end of the tournament remains to be seen.
