Charl Schwartzel confident to go one better at the Thailand Golf Championship
Charl Schwartzel of South Africa is determined to finish his 2012 golf campaign on a high note, as he prepares to compete in this week’s Thailand Golf Championship.
Last year, the 2011 Masters champion carded a 15-under par tournament score, to finish second in the inaugural edition of the Asian Tour event.
This week, he plans to finish one spot better, in a bid to claim the first Asian Tour victory of his career.
Last year, Lee Westwood marked a stellar start to his campaign at the Amata Spring Country Club, by posting scores of 60 and 64, in the first two rounds.
Schwartzel, in the meantime, settled for a nine-under par two-round score, to take the share of the second place on the leaderboard. At that time, he was 11 strokes behind the pace set by Westwood.
Thereafter, he recorded another round of 66 on day three, followed by a 72 in the final round, to finish seven strokes behind Westwood.
Talking to the reporters on Wednesday, he said that it was really difficult to catch Westwood on top of the leaderboard, especially when the Englishman had a sparkling 11-stroke lead after two rounds.
He is now relishing the opportunity to participate in the second edition of the tournament, where he can take revenge of his last year’s defeat.
“I had a great year last year and had a good time here. But Lee was so far ahead after two rounds and we were playing for second spot. I was playing really well and had a good time and was happy to get the invite to come back and see if I can get one better
than last year,” he said.
The South African is currently enjoying a great run of form, having recorded two top-five finishes in the last two European Tour events that he played.
“It’s been a lot better in the last month and a half. I’ve been playing injury free and am able to swing the club better,” he said. “I’ve played nicely the past few weeks. It’s been 5, 3, 2, hopefully 1 this week!”
