Charl Schwartzel eager to add SA Open Championship title to his resume
Charl Schwartzel is aiming to add the SA Open Championship title to his resume, when the European Tour event kicks off this week at the Serengeti Golf & Wildlife Estate, on Thursday, November 15, 2012.
His South African compatriots Tim Clark, Trevor Immelman, Retief Goosen, Ernie Els, James Kingston and Hennie Otto have all won the tournament in the recent seasons.
The 2011 Masters champion has now set his sight on adding his name to that illustrious list by displaying a strong performance this week.
“The SA Open is definitely one of the events I want to win in my career. When you look at the players who have won the Championship in the past, it would be an honour and a privilege to see my name alongside theirs on the trophy,” he said.
He added, “South Africans have obviously got a great record in the event, so hopefully this year it can be my turn to give the home crowds something to cheer about”.
The 28-year-old is enjoying a decent run of form, having recorded a tied 16th-place finish at the BMW Masters last month.
He now plans to bring some improvements in his game, in order to contend strongly for a victory in one of the longest-running sporting events in the world.
Martin Kaymer, who recorded a top-10 finish at the World Golf Championships – HSBC Champions a fortnight ago, will also be present in the field.
Since 2008, Kaymer has not spent a single European Tour season without a victory added to his resume. This season, the streak has yet to find a connection, as the German still looks for a victory on the tour.
With only one event remaining on the European Tour roster after this week, Kaymer wants to end his winning drought on the European Tour by winning the SA Open Championship.
Besides that, he also eyes a strong charge in The Race to Dubai. He currently ranks 24th in the list and a strong finish this week can take him into the top-10 in the list.
According to the European Tour’s policy, the top-10 players in The Race to Dubai, at the end of the season, will share a total prize fund of €1million.
