Charl Schwartzel terms the game of golf as “unfair” over Louis Oosthuizen’s loss at Masters
2011 Masters Champion, Charl Schwartzel is back on the course again at the star-studded Maybank Malaysian Open and is hoping to get over with his haunting memories of failed defence at Augusta National last week.
Stepping on the sprawling Augusta National as the defending champion, clad in the traditional green jacket, Schwartzel had done well earlier in the season and was hoping to retain the coveted title this year.
Instead, the sturdy South African fell for a disastrous performance in the 76th Masters, finishing for a surprising joint 44th.
Schwartzel, however, admitted that he was more enthusiastic about countryman Louis Oosthuizen’s anticipated victory and regarded his loss as unfair.
He said, “I think it is more difficult to watch than it is to play, when you are playing you are in control of the situation but when you are watching you can’t do anything about what is going on out there”.
Schwartzel agreed to the fact that the story would have been a fairytale if he was to hand over the jacket to his countryman Oosthuizen, marking a new era in the history of the sport fort their homeland.
He added, “Obviously it would have been a fairytale story if I had slipped that Jacket on Louis but it wasn’t to be. I think he played the best golf of the week and deserved to win but it just didn’t go his way. Sometimes golf isn’t fair”.
Schwartzel will be part of a strong field lined up for the Maybank title here in Malaysia including the likes of world number seven Martin Kaymer, defending champion Matteo Manassero, Simon Dyson, Alvaro Quiros and many others.
Schwartzel pulled in some strong finishes in the last season, after his stellar victory at the Masters but was never able to land a title on either side of the Atlantic.
He will be hoping to bring an end to his winless streak here at the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club.
Schwartzel lauded the course preparations ahead of the event and regarded it as one of the tougher courses to play on Asian turf.
He said, “The golf course is in great shape. It was last year and it is the same this year”. The event is currently underway at the scenic course.
