Charl Schwartzel wins 2011 Masters
South African golfer, Charl Schwartzel, won the 75th Masters tournament after posting four consecutive birdies in the final round.
Fighting though the dramatic round of the first major of the year, The Masters at the Augusta Golf Club in Georgia, Schwartzel’s amazing final putt paved his way for the green jacket.
The South African carded a six under 66, which was the best closing round at the Masters in 22 years and won by beating Australian players, Adam Scott, and, Jason Day, by two strokes.
Where by the third round the scores were in favour of the Irishman, Rory McIlroy, the final round had fourteen players leading the tournament at one point and time. With so much competition and pressure, Schwartzel, took over his nerves and finished 14 under
274 overall to win the Masters.
Not only did the winner post the lowest round in 22 years, he also became the first Masters champion in its 75 year history to finish it off with four straight birdies.
Schwartzel has won the Masters exactly 50 years after Gary Player became the first non American and South African player to win the championship. As for the major victories, South African player, Trevor Immelman, won in 2008, where as Schwartzel’s good friend
Louis Oosthuizen won the 2010 Open last year.
Schwartzel started his day out well with a birdie on the first and an amazing eagle on the third hole. The player also slipped from his amazing form when he made a bogey on the fourth hole.
The 26 year player was very careful in not playing for bogeys as he very strategically made pars on the following ten holes. Eventually, as mentioned earlier, the lead was secured by a group of leaders, but there came Schwartzel with his birdie spree, as
he carded four straight birdies.
“Walking up 18 was such a special feeling. I only had a one-shot lead, so you don't want to get too excited about it. You've still got to win the golf tournament. But it just really felt good. I don't think that I have ever done so much praying on a golf
course in my life”, said the 2011 Masters winner, Schwartzel.
