Charl Schwartzel wins his maiden green jacket at Masters – Masters News
The Masters produced some brilliance on the final day. It was a rather wild final round in which the leader board was changing after every hole. In the end, it was the South African, Charl Schwartzel, who managed to wear the green jacket and become this
year’s Masters Champion.
It was simply amazing to watch all the players charge on the leader board. Rory Mcllroy, the overnight leader could hear the crowds roaring around him as Tiger Woods was playing in his old style. It was the moment for Schwartzel which came in the late afternoon
of the final round to wear the green jacket.
Schwartzel started off the final day four behind the leader McIlroy. He carded a six-under par, 66 which was also the lowest round of the day. From the start, he took full advantage of his short game and the bright sunny conditions. It was on his very first
hole where his third chip shot from the left of the green rolled inside the hole. From thereon, he never seemed down at any hole. As luck was on his side, his approach shot to the green on the par-4, 3rd slowly fell in the hole.
The South African after three holes was three-under par. At the age of 26, he was so relaxed during the final round and played quality shots during the day. His last four holes of the day proved out to be good ones for him. He birdied all his last four holes
which gave him the victory.
The 26-year-old was ranked at the 29th spot in official world golf rankings. He also improved his rankings and is now placed at the 11th spot. Along with the green jacket, he also managed to capture the winner’s cheque.
Schwartzel had a four day aggregate score of 14-under par, 274.
After his round, Schwartzel said, "There are so many roars that go on around Augusta especially at the back nine. It echoes through those trees. There's always a roar. Every single hole you walk down, someone has done something. And I'd be lying if I said
I wasn't looking at the leader board."
The Aussie duo of young Jason Day and Adam Scott were playing alongside each other. They both managed to finish even at the second spot with a total score of twelve-under par, 276.
As for the 23-year-old Day, this was his first Masters. He impressed many with the way he played during all the four rounds. It was rather his confidence which he showed and certainly looked like he can compete against the best. Day managed to post a brilliant
round of four-under par, 68 but was unable to match the score of Schwartzel.
Scott looked in form on the final day with his broom putter. The Australian posted a brilliant round of five-under par, 67 and moved up on the final leader board. This was a superb performance by him as he was more than happy with his golf. Scott had six
birdies and a single bogey on his score card.
Tiger Woods had to share the fourth spot with Geoff Ogilvy and Luke Donald. All these three players had a four day score of ten-under par, 278.
Woods certainly, was charging on the course as he went five-under for the front-nine. At a point, he was also sharing the lead. The crowds were cheering for him as he was looking good after he completed his front nine holes.
As the conditions were not easy late in the day, Woods failed to repeat his performance on the back-nine. He only managed a single birdie and a bogey. He again finished tied for the fourth spot and had a final day score of five-under par, 67.
As for the three-round leader, Mcllroy, his last year’s performance at The Open was on the back of his mind. He was a bit shaky when he teed off for his final round. The 21-year-old failed to handle the pressure situation and did not hold his nerves. He
again had a disastrous final round of eight-over par, 80 and was truly disappointed.
Nothing seemed to be going right for Rory as he was all over the course on the back-nine. Although he was sharing the lead after nine-holes, but it was the Masters pressure which got to him.
Schwartzel wore the green jacket from the defending champion, Phil Mickelson, at the ceremony. He also picked up the cheque of US$ 1.35 million. He is now the fifth player from South Africa to have won Masters.
