Charl Schwartzel’s putter started working again, takes a good start at the Canadian Open
The 2011 Masters champion Charl Schwartzel returned to the clubhouse on day one of the RBC Canadian Open, after putting a decent five-under par 65 on the leaderboard, on Thursday, July 26, 2012.
Schwartzel started off on the back nine of the Hamilton Golf and Country Club and recorded three birdies to go three-under for the round.
At the par-four second hole, he suffered the only bogey of his round and returned to two-under par. Right after that, he made a strong return with a birdie, followed by an amazing eagle on the very next hole to join six players at the fifth position.
“I got off to a great start, hit the ball really good, gave myself opportunities and converted, which I've not been doing as of late,” he said. “So I've been spending a lot of time on the putting, and it's nice when things you work on work out for you for
a change”.
According to him, the putter worked for him that was causing him problems for the past few months. It was a great comeback by the 27-year-old South African who missed the cut in his appearance at the British Open last week.
“I putted really well today,” he said. “The back nine wasn't as good as the front. Hit a few loose shots from really nowhere. And thank you to my putting, I made some par saves. And that's what you need to do to keep your round going. So I'm very pleased
with the way I putted”.
He is now three strokes behind the pace set by Scott Piercy, who matched the course record with an eight-under par 62. Greg Owen and William McGirt tied for the second place after a seven-under par 63 each.
Despite recording eight birdies and a sterling eagle during the round, he failed to get to the top, thanks to a double bogey, followed by a bogey on the opening two holes of the day.
Still, he looked satisfied with his overall performance because of the great comeback that he made after such a disappointing start.
Robert Garrigus took the sole fourth spot after a six-under par 64.
