Charles Barkley eyeing to become a part-owner of a National Basketball Association team: NBA News
The most dominating rebounder of his time Charles Barkley also known as the Round Mound of Rebound, who is currently working as a colour commentator with a sports channel, is now eyeing to become the co-owner of a National Basketball
Association team.
This idea is not new to Barkley, as he was looking to join the owners group of the Philadelphia 76ers a few years back.
Regarding that old deal Barkley said, "The last group that tried to put something together, but that fell through, I had preliminary conversations with them," but. "I don't know anything about the new group."
At that time Barkley was pretty excited about the new challenge, as he was tired of his eight year long commentary job. Charles said that he is always looking to grow as an individual and he strongly believes that he can do a far
better job than his fellow Hall of Famers, who turned General Managers. However, unfortunately for Barkley things didn’t work out the way he wanted.
Now the fresh offer to join the club of the NBA team owners has once again raised his aged desires and he is pretty thrilled about it.
Hinting towards Michael Jordan's position as major stake holder of the Charlotte Bobcats, Barkley said, “I don't have enough money to be like a Michael [Jordan] and take complete control of an organization. But it would be fun
to, like whether it was in Philadelphia or Phoenix, to put a few million dollars in and be not a speaking owner but just a fun, good investment."
Besides Barkley, Jerry West the ex-GM of the Memphis Grizzlies and Joe Dumars the current President of the Basketball Operation of Detroit Pistons are the two most successful greats, who had done extremely well as the executives
for different NBA teams.
There are also some floundering examples, Jordan, who is running his own franchise at the moment, but didn’t achieve much success with it and then, there is Elgin Baylor, who spent 22 years at the post of GM of the Los Angeles
Clippers, also struggled.
Barkley termed the job as “fun” because he thinks that by not having the major stake relieves him from the strict duties that include: can’t run the franchise according to himself, can’t rotate the roster, and can’t layout plans
regarding arena or hiring and firing.
However, being a part-owner doesn’t mean that one is free from all responsibilities as one man can never bring a team to the victory stand, it requires effort from everyone, who is a part of the franchise.
Besides this being a part of the elite group, who have stakes in the NBA teams, is in itself is a great pride, as not many are fortunate enough to reach such heights in their careers. What change it will bring in the life of Barkley,
who is already enjoying outrageous fame and money, will remains to be seen.
