Charles Francis claims Men’s 100m backstroke gold: Day two - Canadian Olympic & Paralympic Trials
Charles Francis of PPO claimed gold medal of the Men’s 100m backstroke on day two of the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Trials in Montreal on Wednesday, March 28.
Francis displayed his gruelling efforts in the two-lap backstroke event. With his exceptional pace, he showed no mercy to his challengers and reached the medal rostrum for gold medal.
He stayed in a significant lead over his subsequent rival, Matthew Swanston of NEW, but proved his mettle for the crown of the event by clocking a time of 54.84 seconds. He was chased by Swanston, who stayed 0.72 seconds behind the champion and completed
his swim in a time of 55.56 seconds.
He was followed Matt Hawes of ROCS, who was just 0.06 seconds slower from ensuring his second position but finished third by posting a time of 55.62 seconds. The third position holder was chased by Jake Tapp of LOSC, who remained almost half a second behind
and ended fourth by hitting the wall with the timing of 56.17 seconds.
Tapp was followed by Gleb Suvorov of ESWIM, who claimed fifth best position of the discipline by producing an effort of 56.39 seconds.
Similarly, sixth position of the discipline was obtained by Pascal Wollach of UCSC, who remained just a nail away from his former finisher and appeared on the finishing blockade with an effort of 56.42 seconds.
Wollach was followed by Graham Hawes of SCAR, who failed to make any significant improvement in his efforts in the playoff and ended his swim in seventh place. Hawes remained 0.03 seconds away from his former finisher and posted a time of 56.45 seconds.
His effort remained almost one second fastest from Nick Karpov of NYAC, who concluded his swim in eighth best place as he touched the wall with the timing of 57.41 seconds.
In addition, the session ended after the completion of all planned events while the winners collected their accolades at prize ceremony of the championship. Furthermore, Francis was delighted with his title claiming effort and articulated that he will work
hard to excel at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
