Charles Francis excels in Men’s 100m backstroke heats - Canadian Olympic & Paralympic Trials
Charles Francis of PPO excelled in the qualification rounds of Men’s 100m backstroke on second day of the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Trials in Montreal on Wednesday, March 28.
The 23-year-old Francis stunned the aquatic crowd by accomplishing top qualification spot of the 100m discipline. With his immaculate efforts, he devastated hopes of his challengers, who were eyeing the top qualifying position of the discipline.
His powerful stroke coupled with his impressive strategy enabled him to complete his double lap sprint by touching the wall in a time of 54.77 seconds. Francis was traced by Matt Hawes of ROCS, who remained 1.15 seconds apart from his former finisher and
tapped the finishing blockade with the second best timing of 55.92 seconds.
The 26-year-old Hawes enjoyed a benefit of 0.24 seconds over his subsequent rival, Matthew Swanston of NEW, who proved his eligibility for the third fastest qualification spot of the event by ending his swim in a time of 56.16 seconds.
The 21-year-old Swanston was chased by Pascal Wollach of UCSC, who was just one stroke slower from securing third position of the event and settled on the wall as fourth best finisher by submitting a time of 56.30 seconds.
Jake Tapp of LOSC emerged as the fifth best swimmer of the race as he stayed 0.08 seconds away from his preceding swimmer and completed his swim in a time of 56.38 seconds.
Subsequently, Tapp enjoyed an advantage of 0.11 seconds over Gleb Suvorov of ESWIM, who proved his audacity for the sixth best spot of the race by posting an effort of 56.49 seconds.
Graham Hawes of SCAR snatched seventh best position of the discipline as he remained two strokes slower from Suvorov and clocked an effort of 56.73 seconds. He was traced by Nick Karpov of NYAC, who was only 0.14 seconds slower and completed his swim in
a time of 56.87 seconds to enter the final round.
In addition, the audience enjoyed gruelling efforts of all participants in the 100m event while Francis expressed his aim of improving his pace in the playoff and accomplishing gold medal of the event.
