Charles Gipson Houchin wins Men’s 400m freestyle gold: Day five – Maria Lenk Trophy, Rio de Janeiro
Charles Gipson Houchin of FIAT/MINAS pocketed gold medal of the Men’s 400m freestyle on fifth day of the 2012 Maria Lenk Trophy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Saturday, April 28.
With his impeccable efforts in the mediocre distance freestyle event, Houchin proved his eligibility for the title of the discipline. His powerful strokes coupled with true determination played a vital role in his victory and he reached the finishing end for gold medal.
Houchin faced no trouble in occupying gold medal of the discipline as he hit the wall with the timing of 3 minutes and 50.11 seconds.
His title-claiming effort remained 1.34 seconds faster from his strongest challenger and his teammate, Juan Pereyra, who followed him on the medal rostrum for silver medal by submitting a time of 3 minutes and 51.45 seconds.
The second position holder was trailed by Marcos V Ferrari De Oliveira, who remained nearly two body lengths behind and tapped the finishing blockade with the timing of 3 minutes and 53.97 seconds.
In the meantime, Giuliano Carer Rocco occupied fourth best spot of the race as he emerged on the wall with the timing of 3 minutes and 56.23 seconds.
Fifth best spot of the race was secured by Lucas Cruz Kanieski of FIAT/MINAS, who remained just 0.08 seconds behind and ended his swim in a time of 3 minutes and 56.31 seconds.
Kanieski was trailed by Andre Schultz of CRF/RJ, who succeeded in finishing his swim in sixth place as he touched the wall with the timing of 3 minutes and 58.90 seconds.
Seventh position of the freestyle discipline was secured by Lucas Bittencourt Azevedo, who stayed 0.61 seconds slower and hit the wall with the timing of 3 minutes and 59.51 seconds.
He was chased by Luiz Rogerio Arapiraca of UNISANTA, who secured eighth best position of the event by clocking an effort of 3 minutes and 59.61 seconds.
Houchin received a huge round of applause from the audience for his gruelling efforts in the 400m discipline while he stated that he will try to do the same at 2012 London Olympics.
