Charles Howell leaves Honda Classic field with mixed feelings – Golf News
Charles Howell III left the field with mixed feelings of joy and sorrow because of the un-even scores in the final round at the PGA National Champion Course, Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
He finished tied for the 26th position in the Honda Classic on Sunday, March 4, 2012,
Howell was placed 12th on the leaderboard while he entered the final round. However, his start was a little confusing.
He bogeyed the par-four second, which he recovered with the help of an eagle on the very next hole.
The par-four fourth and sixth each saw him struggling with his putting and he missed the par shots, converting them to bogeys.
Yet at another point in time, the player bounced back with a stunning hole-in-one at the 197-yard seventh to end his front nine at one-under par.
“I hit a good shot. I thought it would be close,” Howell said. “Obviously, when a ball goes in you need to hit a good shot and have a little bit of luck”.
Further on the back nine, he managed to card a four-over par score with two bogeys and a double bogey, finishing the round at three-over par 73.
Therefore, his place on the leaderboard saw him fall 12 positions down to share the 26th spot with Ryan Palmer, Erik Compton, and Troy Matteson, all of whom finished at a level-par 280 tournament score.
When he was asked to comment about his overall performance in the final round, he replied by saying that his game saw ups and downs.
However, he will always remember the ace, as the players wait for it for their entire careers.
Therefore, his final round, despite a number of bogeys, has given him a sense of satisfaction and made him proud.
He will now move to Doral Golf Resort & Spa, Doral, Florida, USA to participate in the second World Golf Championship of the year, Cadillac Championship.
He said that he plans to overcome his mistakes and will try to remain consistent in the events he will play prior to the Masters Tournament at Augusta National.
This approach will in turn give him a boost and confidence before entering the first of the four major events of the season.
