Charles Martin prevails in Round 3 of the ASP PRIME Nike Lowers Pro – Surfing News
Guadeloupe’s Charles Martin walked away with a successful result in the 14th heat of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) PRIME Nike Lowers Pro’s Round 3 (Round of 96) that continued to treat the crowd to thrilling surfing action at
the renowned beach-break of Lower Trestles in San Clemente, California, on Tuesday, May 1.
Martin made his way through into the fourth round (Round of 48) after claiming victory in his Round 3 heat. Accompanying him into the next round was Brazil’s Jesse Mendes, who had managed to grab the second-place finish.
The surfing conditions prevailing at the primary event site turned out to be a real treat for the surfers during the afternoon session. The clean two-to-four foot waves appearing at Lower Trestles gave plenty of opportunity to the talented surfers, both
local as well as international, to put their smooth and stylish skills on display while pursuing the prestigious event title as well as a huge slice of the prize purse and ASP ranking points that were on offer at the latest ASP PRIME event. The fans had been
witnessing breath-taking performances throughout the day and expected the final-few heats left in the day to be nothing less of epic either.
The 14th heat of Round 3 pitted Martin against Mendes, Australia’s Dion Atkinson and France’s Maxime Huscenot.
As the battle got underway, Martin got off to an excellent start, taking only a few minutes before launching towards a juicy wave that appeared. Catching the wave, he unloaded a string of exquisite manoeuvres to earn an 8.00 for the effort, thus moving into
an early heat. He backed it up with a 6.43-point wave in the dying minutes of the heat to finish with a heat-total of 14.43 points. With the score keeping him in the lead until the end, the Guadeloupian surfer confidently made his way through into the next
round.
Mendes successfully extended his life in the event as well after scoring a 5.70 off his first business-wave and backing it up with a 7.40-point wave for a heat-total of 13.10 points.
Atkinson collected a couple of scores in the six-point range for a heat-total of 12.93 points, whereas Huscenot rounded out the bottom-two positions after putting on a lacklustre performance for a two-wave total of 10.84 points. Both Atkinson and Huscenot
failed to pass through the very first round that they surfed in at the latest edition of the ASP PRIME Nike Lowers Pro.
