Charles Oakley rips Dwight Howard; Says Orlando Magic handled the situation badly – NBA News
Whenever disputes come up between teams and players in the NBA, it is very easy to predict who is going to be on whose side.
Team owners and front office bearers usually side with the team as they are in a better position to understand their concerns. On the other hand, players tend to speak up for the person in question as they want to show unity for
the players and the players union.
However, there is one former NBA player who does not let preconceived notions determine his feelings and is speaking out against a current NBA player and the way he has been acting these past couple of months.
Charles Oakley recently had a conversation with ESPN radio, and spoke his mind on the Dwight Howard situation and his eventual trade to the Los Angeles Lakers.
Oakley was of the view that the Magic franchise let him control them, and eventually got a poor deal in the end when they parted ways with him.
“A lot of guys cry in this league these days. I try not to get caught up in that. The management in Orlando let him get away with it. Most times, they put kids in timeout. They never put him in timeout. He just kept crying and
got his way. Now he’s in LA with Kobe so they got a chance to win a couple championships in the next two or three years. They just pleased him anyway they could but he never did anything to please them,” said Oakley.
Oakley believes that Howard was allowed to create trouble by the Magic front office when they conceded to all his demands and tried too hard to please him. He feels they should have been stricter in dealing the centre, trading
him last year for a better deal. Instead, the Magic held on to Howard in the hope that he would sign an extension and remain their franchise player for the foreseeable future.
Howard was traded to the Lakers earlier this month in a blockbuster four team trade that gave Orlando future first round draft picks and young players to commence their rebuilding process. However, the Magic management have been
criticized since the trade for not getting anything worthwhile in return.
