Why can we describe Charles V as the most powerful man of his era?

  1. Through both his parents (Joan the Mad and Philip the Handsome), Charles V inherited the crowns of both the Holy Roman Empire and Spain, creating the largest and wealthiest kingdom in Europe.

    This was at the time of the Spanish Conquest of the Americas, so his Spanish Kingdom was the wealthiest in the world at the time.

    The Hapsburg lands and the Holy Roman Empire controlled the largest territories on the European continent (through marriage and feudal overlord-ship),  this, combined with Spain and all its New World territories  inadvertently made him the largest landholder in Europe.

    All these factors made Charles V the most powerful man in Europe at his time.
