Agree with Baltazar that Cerdan was unfortunate and even worse he lost his life before he could redeem himself in the ring.  I think he would have.

Burley was highly skilled as was Cerdan.  Burley beat Archie Moore once and Zivic twice.  Cerdan beat Zale.  Overall I think Burley fought the better fighters as Cerdan had just started fighting the better ranked fighters and never had a chance to prove how really great he was..

Based on who they fought I think Burley would have decisioned Cerdan

I'd go for Marcel Cerdan, longer fight record with proportionately more wins (and more by knockout).

The La Motta fight was unfortunate, who can go on with a dislocated shoulder?

Marcel Cerdan was good, very good in fact, but not that good.  It Eddie Futch considered Charley Burley the best fighter P4P that he had seen in his storied career, then that is good enough for me.  I give Burley the edge based on Eddie Futch's word, without ever having seen Burley fight.  There is old school, then there are guys like Futch, who transcend labels and demand respect.  Eddie said Burley was the best, I gotta believe him.
