Charley Hoffman falters on the final moments of the Travelers Championship
Charley Hoffman faltered on the final two holes of the Travelers Championship that cost him a win at the TPC River Highlands, in Cromwell, on Sunday, June 24, 2012.
Hoffman had an error-free round through 16 holes and carded a total of seven birdies. That was a time when he had a three-stroke lead over Bubba Watson and Marc Leishman.
However, he failed to hold on to his lead and made a wayward tee shot on the 17th hole that cost him a double bogey in the end.
In addition to that, the 18th hole also witnessed him make mistakes on each of the shots he played, till the ball found the cup on the fifth stroke.
“It's a tough tee shot for me,” Hoffman talked about the 17th hole. “I wanted to hit a draw down there, but the hole really doesn't set up for a draw, and fanned it off to the right”.
“What I did on 18 was pretty pathetic,” he added. “Pretty easy drive for me, sets up pretty good, and fanned it out to the right, and pretty poor second shot, pretty poor bunker shot and even worse putt, so when it's said and done, obviously a bad finish
and bad taste in my mouth, but you learn from it”.
Hoffman carded a four-under par 66 to share the second spot with the Masters Champion Bubba Watson, who signed a bogey-free five-under par 65.
According to the golf commentators, Hoffman should not have tried a new drive on the 17th tee, as he was in a very good position to take the trophy home.
However, it was not his day and the experiment’s reaction turned completely against him in the end. Overall, he looked really disappointing, especially after coming that close to victory.
At the end of the tournament, he told that he will have to live with the truth that he failed to make a good finish at the Travelers, where the victory was almost confirmed for him.
In the meantime, Leishman had a stunning round with an eight-under par 62 to register his first ever victory on the PGA Tour.
