Charley Hoffman records five back-to-back birdies on Day-2 of the Travelers Championship
Charley Hoffman got off to a hot start in the second round of the Travelers Championship at the TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, prior to the inclement weather forcing the game into suspension, on Friday, June 22, 2012.
Hoffman started on the back nine of the course and parred the opening hole, followed by a birdie on the 11th hole.
Thereafter, he did not stop making good shots and birdied each of the four holes that he played. While heading towards the 16th tee, rain showers started pouring and he had to move back to his tent.
“I hit two shots on the tenth hole, which I hit on the green and then I stopped for an hour and a half or so, and then got going again, and I actually got off a nice little run there, birdied 11,” he talked about the birdies he had. “... Then I made good
putt 12 for birdie”.
“Then 13 I hit in two,” he added. “... The next hole, I hit it close, made birdie there, and almost hit it on the green on 15”.
He looked really happy with the streak of five birdies and said that he could have kept on going if the weather had not hindered him.
“It was a nice five-hole run,” he said. “Obviously wish I probably could have kept it going a little longer, but obviously in a good frame of mind going into tomorrow”.
He is now just one stroke behind the leader, Fredrik Jacobson, who carded a four-under par 66 to settle for a nine-under par two-round score.
In the meantime, Nathan Green also joined him on the second spot, with a three-under par score through nine holes.
Green had a disappointing start, as he suffered two consecutive bogeys to start off his round. Yet, he managed to bounce back strongly with five birdies on the next seven holes that he played.
David Mathis, the overnight leader, faltered on the back nine of the course and signed two double bogeys, along with a bogey and a birdie each, to finish three-over par 73. He is now tied for the 26th position.
