Charley Hull gets off to a good start at first major event
Charley Hull kicked off her first LPGA event, Kraft Nabisco Championship, in an impressive style, as she scored a 1-under 71 in the first round at the Dinah Shore Tournament Course, in Rancho Mirage.
The English teen is more than thrilled, as she started her professional career by participating in a major event.
Despite the strong field that is featuring tough players on the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association), Hull did better than her fans had anticipated.
Hull played better than most of the professional players in the roster, she scored 2 birdies. She kicked off the first round with a solid strategy and drained a birdie on the first hole.
She played tactfully on most of the holes and avoided making sloppy moves. Despite the psychological pressure, Hull appeared to be in a comfortable position and made calculated strokes.
She parred the par-5 second and par-4 third holes, but faltered on the fourth, as she registered a bogey. However, Hull rebounded on the sixth, carding her second birdie of the round.
Speaking to the media at the end of the first round, Hull said that she did not expect to perform so well in her first LPGA event.
She said that playing alongside big names will help her gain the much-needed confidence.
The field of the Kraft Nabisco Championship is strong enough to trouble rookies like Hull. The current world number one Yani Tseng and the defending champion Stacy Lewis are also in the roster.
Yani Tseng fired a 68 to stand at the third position on the leaderboard. On the other hand, the defending champion faltered, messing up her round. Lewis stood tied for the 60th, as she carded 2-over 74.
Hull’s magical performance has led her fans to keep their fingers crossed, as they did not expect her to perform so well in the major tournament.
"I'm overwhelmed. I'm so happy, and it should be great. I didn't think they were going to change it for me, but I'm glad they did. I was upset, obviously, but now I'm really happy that I'm back in the team," Hull told reporters.
She added that she is happy with her performance and is looking forward to the next rounds.
