Charley Hull surprises fans in first round at Hoylake
English Charley Hull stunned the spectators in the first round of Ricoh Women’s British Open 2102, as she posted a 71 to tie for the third position along with nine other players.
When Hull set foot in the Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake, United Kingdom to kick off her first round, she was besieged by mixed emotions as she did not want to let down the English spectators.
However, the 16-year-old golfer was more than thrilled after she managed to edge past most of the top-ranked Ladies professional Golf Association (LPGA) and Ladies European Tour (LET) contenders on the leaderboard.
Starting her first round on the front nine, Hull looked in a stunning form as she avoided making too many mistakes.
The English teen carded her first birdie on the par-4 second hole and parred the next two holes. She then shot another birdie on the fifth. However, she faltered on the eighth as she missed a putt on the greens and ended up registering her first bogey.
On the back nine, Hull could not score a birdie, but thankfully, she steered clear of bogeys as well.
Commentators said that the rising star capitalised on the crowd support at Hoylake, and she is expected to keep her momentum going in the next three rounds.
Although the field is quite fearsome, Hull is likely to remain in contention if she does not let her nerves overcome her in the second and third round.
Sharing her thoughts while speaking to the LPGA Tour at the end of the round, Hull said that she is more than happy after getting off to a flying start. She said she is looking forward to the next rounds, but is aware that the competition is set to get tougher.
The young prodigy went on to say that she found it a bit hard to focus on her game because of sudden gusts of wind, but the weather condition improved afterwards.
“I'm pretty happy. I'm happy. It got windier when I first teed off and then about nine holes into the round, it died down a bit,” Hull said.
She said that she could perform well on the eighth hole, which took a toll on her score. “I hit it right and I hit it over the green, chipped up and missed the putt. I should have birdied 7, as well, because I had about a 6-footer on that and should have birdied -- well not should have, but I had a good birdie chance on the third, as well”.
