Charlie Beljan battles to shoot an impressive 64
Charlie Beljan shot one of the most important rounds of his career at the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Classic. Beljan shot eight-under 64 to lead the tournament by three strokes after two rounds.
No doubt, a round of 64 was good but considering the condition he was in, this round is nothing less than a magnificent achievement by Charlie.
He is currently playing some of his best golf. Previously at 139th on the money tour list, he is not ranked 65.
A victory or a top-three finish would surely propel him inside the top-125 on the money tour list. If he is successful in achieving that goal, it would mean a full time tour card for him in the next season.
Beljan had to take some long breaks during his five hour rounds. He was suffering from short breath, along with chest pain and dizziness.
Shooting the second best round of his career, that too, at a critical moment while going through all this was a huge achievement for Charlie.
The world number 351 shot a total of six birdies, two bogeys and two eagles. The eagles on the 1st and the 11th hole really did the trick from him, although he was disappointed with the bogey on the 12th and the 17th.
It has given him a huge boost to get inside the top-125 on the money tour list. Nevertheless, he is hospitalised for now. Signals indicate that he will make it to the field on Saturday.
"It got kind of scary," Adcox said, his caddie. "I gotta give Charlie a lot of credit for what he did. He finished. I thought he was going to quit out there a few times. He sat on the bag a few times. He laid down a few times. Unbelievable. It actually started
at the beginning".
His caddie also said that Charlie felt numbness in the arms but, to his credit, he played extremely well with the iron. That really made the difference at the end.
"He called for a medic when we were making the turn, so I knew he had some problems," said the other PGA Tour pro in the group, Ed Loar.
"He sure was playing golf. He was scary good. He hit four of the best iron shots I've ever seen on par-5s. It was pretty awesome".
The moment Beljan finished his round, he was carried on a stretcher to an ambulance from the scoring area.
