Charlie Beljan wins Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic
It has been a dramatic week for Charlie Beljan. He was in the hospital after his second round but his 71 and 69 on the weekend was good enough to land in his first PGA Tour title, as he won Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic.
Beljan suffered a panic attack on Friday and was hospitalised right after his round. He did not think that he would even finish this tournament.
However, he needed to go ahead with his game to have any chance of securing his future on the PGA tour.
“I thought I was having a heart attack,” he told ABC News. “I felt from the first tee to the 18th, I felt like I was going to pass out but I didn’t have a choice”.
Although his condition was very serious, the motivation carried him on for the day. It was a magnificent achievement by the rookie.
Fighting with such serious medical conditions, and going on to win the tournament, was a one big effort, which will be remembered for a long time on the tour.
On the final day, Beljan shot a decent round of 69, which was sufficient to fend off the challenges put forth by Matt Every and Robert Garrigus.
Charlie eventually went on to claim the title by two shots. There was a tie between Evert and Garrigus for the second spot, as they finished with a fourteen-under.
"Friday is what I will remember from this week," Beljan said. "And then obviously, being the champion of the tournament, I won't forget that, either. But if I can do what I did on Friday, there's nothing that's not possible for me".
His final round on Sunday was pretty eventful, just like his whole tournament. He shot three bogeys, a double bogey and eight birdies.
His bogey on the last hole might have given him some hiccups but it was all good for him in the end. This Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic will be remembered for the heroics of Charlie Beljan.
"Every day I drove underneath that Disney sign coming in here that said, 'Where dreams come true,' and that's just what happened this week," Beljan said.
