Charlie Furbush’s pitching helps Seattle Mariners defeat Oakland Athletics 7-4 - MLB Update
Seattle Mariners’ starter Charlie Furbush was tremendous in his debut game as he gave up only one earned run and two hits with an ERA of 3.52 in the Mariners’ 7-4 victory over the Oakland Athletics at Safeco Field, Seattle on August 3.
The first three innings remained empty as the batters displayed a shaky performance with the bat. At first base, Jemile Weeks fouled out as Coco Crisp fouled out to right-field while Hideki Matsui also did not make some runs and flied out to centre-field
during the first inning. Brendan Ryan singled off left-field but Ichiro Suzuki and Dustin Ackley both flied out towards centre-field at the bottom of the first inning.
In the third inning, Ryan Sweeney grounded out to right-field, Adam Rosales popped out to third base and Landon Powell flied out to centre-field without adding some run to the Athletics’ score-card. Mariners led off 2-0 in the fourth inning by posting two
initial runs. Mike Carp and Casper Wells both contributed two collective runs when Josh Bard singled to centre-field.
At the top of the fifth inning, Conor Jackson posted the first run for the Athletics when Scott Sizemore hit a double-run shot towards left-field. On the other hand, the Mariners continued to increase their lead and smashed a couple of runs again to take
a 4-1 lead at the bottom of the fifth inning.
Carp grounded out to third base but Suzuki added a single run. The second run was taken by Ackley when Wells singled off left-field. The pitchers had control in the sixth inning as they threw some amazing pitches. Furbush permitted just one run in his five
inning pitches and had three strike-outs on his 62 pitches.
Mariners got a 6-1 lead in the seventh inning when Ryan contributed one run on the drive of Wells towards right-field and Carp scored a single run on the grounder of Franklin Gutierrez to third base. At the bottom of the eighth inning, the Mariners led off
with 7-1 when Suzuki completed a single run on the drive of Carp towards left-centre.
During the ninth inning, the Athletics added three runs to curtail their lead 7-4. Josh Willingham homered (416 feet) to left-centre while Crisp and Matsui scored two runs jointly. After having a series finale, the Mariners swept the Athletics 3-0 in the
three-game series.
