Charlie Lister eyes up East Anglian Derby at Yarmouth

Any greyhound racing enthusiast would know that Charlie Lister has had no shortage in success over the years, and despite winning the English Derby five times, the Nottinghamshire-based handler refuses to call it a day as he eyes up the Betfair East Anglian Cup at Yarmouth over 462m this Saturday.

It’s every greyhound trainer’s dream to one day triumph in the Derby at Wimbledon, and when one has achieved success on five occasions, you know you’re dealing with a big player and can expect a huge list of other big race successes to follow. With that in mind, if Lister prevails at Yarmouth, it will make it his 11th win in the event.

Lister secured the East Anglian Derby title in extraordinary fashion with a one-two-three finish last year and has decided to give Fear Zafonic the chance to defend his title after a few weeks ago withdrawing him from the Steel City Cup at Sheffield, the final of which was run last night.

Zafonic’s renewal of his association with Yarmouth makes sense now after he produced a perfect warm-up last week when clocking 27.89sec. The 2009 greyhound of the year won the competition last year in 27.57sec, and has proved that his form remains the same after picking up victories in his last three meets over the course and distance, clocking a best time of 27.53sec.

The champion will be joined by kennelmates Yahoo Jamie, Final Boe, Reluctant and Jordansoilutions, the runner-up in last year’s competition.

Zafonic and Jordansoilutions will likely top the ante-post market but will have to put in a lot of leg work to produce the same results, as they will be up against the likes of Lainedans Flyer (John Smith’s Peterborough Derby) and Sparklee Bernie (John Smith’s Kent Derby), Ten Large Down and last week’s impressive trialist Skidroe Joe.

Can Charlie Lister triumph once again and claim the £17,000 winner’s prize?
