Charlie Lister’s Laurels success comes at a price
It was a bitter-sweet night for legendary Charlie Lister in the heats for the Stan James Laurels.
Three of his runners made it through to next week’s semi-finals, but it came at a cost as Betfred Select Stakes champion Jordansolutions failed to qualify after crashing out, literally, in the third heat of the night.
In a dramatic race, Lister’s star hound got involved in a battle up front with Steel City Cup champion Mill Pinpoint. They had exchanged blows well before they turned for home, where pulling three lengths clear of the field they clashed once more and both tumbled out of the race. This gave the two other Lister runners in the race, Jordan Light and Yahoo Jamie, the opportunity to shoot to the front and finish first and second, respectively. Thankfully, both Mill Pinpoint and Jordansolutions finished the race and were walked back to the kennels, seemingly none the worse for their terrible falls.
The fastest time of the night came from Jolly Poacher in heat five, as he made all from the front to speed away pretty impressively in a time of 27.51secs.
Chris Allsopp clocked up a double on the card and goes into the semi-finals with a strong hand after StanJames.com Pall Mall winner Ballymac Ace and Fatboyz Romeo won both their heats in good fashion. Heat two saw Paddy Curtin’s Hello Dino recover from a slow start to dominate down the back straight and weave his way through tiring runners to score pretty readily in the end, he’s one to watch in next week’s semi-final races, which are scheduled to take place on Thursday evening.
