Charlie Whitehurst to get the start for Seattle Seahawks
Head coach Pete Carroll confirmed that Seattle Seahawks backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst will get the start when the Seahawks play the New York Giants this Sunday, 7 November.
Whitehurst will get the start in place of Matt Hasselbeck, who has still not been cleared to play by doctors after receiving a concussion in the Seahawks' 33-3 loss to the Oakland Raiders last Sunday.
"I think it's a little more serious than I thought," Carroll told reporters. "I visited with Matt after the game and stuff and I didn't realize there was anything going on."
Carroll pointed out that the Seahawks began taking Hasselbeck's condition more seriously when symptoms began to appear the following day.
"I'm surprised a little bit, but it's real," Carroll added. "That's good for me to understand it better, too."
Whitehurst, who was brought in as part of a trade with the San Diego Chargers, has only taken a handful of snaps over five seasons in the NFL and has never thrown a pass.
"The circumstances are good. We're playing a good team. Playing at home. It's all you can really ask for. I plan on going out there and executing and helping this team win."
Carroll expressed confidence in handing the ball over to his backup when he said, "He's ready. I've talked to Charlie from the first day he got here that he's coming here to play football. Nothing else. He's not coming here to be a backup or to do anything
other than to make himself a spot. He has done a fantastic job up until this point. He's done everything that we've asked of him and we're real excited to see him play now."
The Seahawks are currently 4-3 on the season and in first place in the NFC West.
