Charlie Whiting insists Michael Schumacher should understand rules – Formula 1 news
FIA Formula 1 race director, Charlie Whiting has criticised Michael Schumacher after the incident in the Hungarian Grand Prix and said that the German driver should understand the rules.
Schumacher lined up on a wrong grid position in the preceding race at Hungaroring Circuit due to which the race was delayed. Afterwards, he switched off the car’s engine as he presumed that the rules regarding the race restart have not been changed since
2005. Resultantly, the race Marshals pushed the seven-time world champion’s car off the grid which caused a considerable delay.
Later on, Whiting who is the official race starter asserted that the record championship holder caused the interruption in starting the race. Furthermore, he said that being the second most experienced driver in the history of the sport, Schumacher should
know the rules and regulations.
“Michael should know the rules,” the Briton said.
In addition, in response to the question that whether the drivers are to be given license to qualify for F1 race start-ups after the respective tests, he said that there is no such procedure at present. However, he said that they expect the teams in F1 to
be familiar with the necessary rules and expressed that it is their responsibilities to make their drivers and staff understand the race policies.
“Not by the FIA,” he answered. “We assume that a team competing in Formula One knows the rules. It is the responsibility of the teams to ensure that its drivers – its employees – know the rules,” said Whiting.
At present, the most celebrated driver in the history of the sport is standing at 12th place in the drivers’ championship with 29 points along with Pastor Maldonado of Williams. Besides, he is ahead of Paul di Resta of Force India and is behind
Kamui Kobayashi of Sauber.
It will be interesting to know that he has retired in six out of the first eleven grands prix. Although, he has been strong in the qualifying, conversely, he could not convert his competitive grid positions into good race finishes in most of the races.
Nonetheless, he has secured third podium finish in the European GP which has boosted up his morale and he is aiming to attain better results in the forthcoming races.
