Charlie Whiting says Blown Diffuser illegal while Double Diffuser, F-Duct were legal – Formula 1
The International Automobile Federation (FIA) technical advisor Charlie Whiting has stated that the Blown Diffuser technology is against the FIA laws whereas the recent innovations like F-Duct and Double Diffuser were legal.
Whiting added that the clampdown of the Blown Diffuser in the middle of the 2011 Formula 1 season has nothing to do with the Red Bull team and the FIA sought out that the device was illegal.
The Double Diffuser and the F-Duct were banned by the FIA at the end of the 2009 and the 2010 seasons respectively.
Talking about these two technologies, Whiting stated, “The double diffuser and the f-duct were legal. But during the course of the season the teams got together with us and decided they weren't needed in F1, so we wrote rules to outlaw them. They actually
complied with the rules and that is why they were allowed to stay until the end of the season.”
Previously the Red Bull camp repeatedly stated that the Blown Diffuser clampdown in the middle of the 2011 season has something to do with the lead of the Red Bull team in both championship tables.
Whiting clearly stated that the decision of the Blown Diffuser was not a political one.
“I'm aware of some stories being written, but to be frank with you, I know it's not a political decision, I don't think anybody knows that is the area Red Bull are dominant in. It's a purely technical intervention from our side, and I feel perfectly comfortable
with that,” commented Whiting.
Apart from the Blown Diffuser’s controversial decision, the FIA has also restricted the teams to use the same engine maps for the qualifiers and the race which is again believed to prevent the one sided performance of the Red Bull team in the qualifiers
where they are able to go half a second faster than the top ranked teams.
Nevertheless, the European Grand Prix qualifiers are going to be contested on Saturday, June 25, 2011 and it will be interesting to see the effects of the engine mapping rule on Red Bull.
