Charlie Wi finishes round two on a high note
The man from South Korea has had a decent season so far. He has played fifteen events and made cuts in twelve of them, his best finish was the second leg at the Pebble Beach.
The Korean is ranked at 108 in the world golf rankings and 38th on the PGA Tour money list.
Despite having an average season, Wi has won $1,219,342 this season.
In the US Open, he displayed a good performance and finished at T29. Not many people would have expected Charlie to do well in the Travelers Championship.
Last year, Charlie failed to make it to the last two rounds. This year, as well, he was not seen as a title contender but his strong round-two finish means that he has a bright of chance of winning the Travelers Championship.
If it had not been for the three bogeys, which he scored on the 10th, 17th and 18th hole, he would have been at T2 with Nathan Green.
Meanwhile, he scored birdies on the first, fourth, sixth, ninth, eleventh, thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteen holes.
In fact, till the sixteenth hole, he was 7-under par and on his way to record the best score of the day until he bogeyed on the next two holes to finish at 5-under par after round two.
As compared to the last outing he had at the TPC River Highlands, in 2011, Charlie has improved his game, his performances have gone better and he seems to be more comfortable now.
He plays with a swing style known as “Stack and Tilt”. Wi’s coach considers him to be the best example of Stack and Tilt swing style.
Wi does not transfer his body weight on to the back leg on his back swing, instead, he pushes the weight forward, even when he is using the driver.
Charlie’s ball hitting is phenomenal, on the tour many players consider him to be one of the swiftest ball strikers around.
Wi has been very successful on the Asian Tour but his record on the PGA Tour has not been as impressive.
He has had an average season but if he can finish strongly at the Travelers, then surely it would be a big achievement for him.
